Thyroid eye disease, also called Graves’ eye disease, is an autoimmune condition that develops when the immune system attacks the thyroid gland, a butterfly-shaped gland located in the neck. Graves’ disease most commonly affects women over the age of 20. In the U.S. alone, about 1 million people are diagnosed with thyroid eye disease each year. In TED the muscles around the eyes get swollen and thickened which leads to bulging eyes, retracted eyelids and poor eye movement. This translates into painful, light sensitive, red eyes with or without double vision and possible blindness.

Dr. Kwitko is a Diplomate of the American Board of Ophthalmology (Board Certified), Fellow of the American College of Surgeons (F.A.C.S.), International College of Surgeons (F.I.C.S.), American Academy of Ophthalmology (F.A.A.O.), International Society of Orbital Disorders (F.I.S.O.D.) and is a founding fellow of the Neuro-Ophthalmic Surgical Society (F.N.O.S.S.). He is additionally a Clinical Professor at the University of South Florida where he teaches residents the art and science of Oculoplastic and orbital surgery.
