What is thyroid eye disease?
Thyroid eye disease, also called Graves’ eye disease, is an autoimmune condition that develops when the immune system attacks the thyroid gland, a butterfly-shaped gland located in the neck. The same autoimmune response attacks the eye muscles and connective tissue within the eye sockets, resulting in thyroid eye disease.
Eye symptoms can range from mild to severe, and in about 10% to 20% of patients, vision can be threatened. While both thyroid disease and thyroid eye disease stem from the same autoimmune disorder, each condition must be treated separately.
