When thyroid disease has already been diagnosed and confirmed, an eye exam is all that’s needed to confirm the presence of thyroid eye disease.

If you have several of the symptoms of thyroid eye disease, your ophthalmologist may direct you to have an evaluation of your thyroid, which typically can be done with a blood test, to check for thyroid disease before diagnosing thyroid eye disease.

Once diagnosed, you should have your eyes evaluated on a regular basis to check for vision loss and permanent changes in the anatomy of your eyes and orbit that could lead to eye pathology that you may not notice in their earliest stages. Even once your thyroid condition is under control, eye disease can continue to progress, so regular eye exams are critical.
